Default CitiMortgage 3 yrs in foreclosure, still wanting to save home

*sigh* Where to begin...bought the home in June 2005, ran into problems almost immediately because of my DHs drug addiction. Tried to file CH 13 - no go; converted to Ch 7 - no dice, trustee said it would be "abusive" and suggested we allow the house to go through foreclosure, then refile Ch. 13. This cost us $3K or so to end up basically at square one.November 2006 my DH's drug habit caught up to him...he lost his job (meaning 60% less household income, on paper anyway since he'd been blowing it all anyway - no pun intended). Thankfully, he went through outpatient treatment and has been clean for almost 2 years now. Fast foward about a year. Kept trying to contact someone at Citi who'd talk to me about a modification, anything. Was told that they'd have to reopen the attys file (and basically start THAT meter running again? No, thanks). April 2007 a foreclosure sale date was set; we moved into an apt for fear we wouldn't be able to find a place that would take our 2 dogs and have a rent we could afford. September 2007 we were essentially locked out of the house when Citi contracted a "property preservation" company to "secure" the property. Their idea of securing the property was to damage the lock that was in place, put their own lock on the front door, and leave the rest of it wide open. Contact the preservation company and Citi in September to find out what the heck was going on...no one would return my calls. Fast forward to January this year. Got a letter from HopeNow. Called was told a counselor would get back to me...nada, never heard from anyone, figured we were a lost cause. February started the notifications for the lease renewal on our apartment. Contacted Citi again in hopes of trying to work out SOMETHING; again, good luck reaching a body rather than voicemail and anyone calling me back. Forgot to mention, this is also a VA loan. VA's solution was to try to sell the home...yeah, right, sure now that the bottom has fallen out here in FL. Numerous foreclosure sale dates later, I FINALLY talked to the person assigned my file at Citi in July 2008. Did the workout paperwork only to have her tell me that before they could really do anything in the way of a loan mod, we would have to make up the deficiency - $75000!!! "Is there a family member or friend you could borrow it from?" You're kidding, right? Now, this week, the contractor the "preservation company" hired to mow the lawn was witnessed walking out with my stainless steel refrigerator. When I got over to the property, we discovered that the stove had been stolen as well. Filed a police report, contacted the "preservation company", working with them re: apprehending, prosecuting the thief and compensating me for the theft. Talked to Citi today, according to their records, they are working on a DIL resolution (presumably with VA 'cuz no one's contacted me). Bottom line....I still would like to try to save my home - if someone would just TALK to me and give me a straight answer and TRY to help. We want to make good on our mortgage obligation, we just need some help! Or should we just cut our losses, suck it up (our credit's ruined anyway), take the DIL and walk away?
